International Development Week (IDW): Feb. 6 - 12

International Development Week  #IDW2022 is an annual initiative held the first full week in February since 1991 to engage Canadians on global issues. Canadians can reflect on our contributions to poverty reduction and international humanitarian assistance.

The theme for 2022 is "Go for the Goals" #GofortheGoals referring to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The theme illustrates the idea of moving forward in a collaborative and positive way toward a better world.

The Sustainable Development Goals supersede the Millennium Development Goals in 2016. "The seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are our shared vision of humanity and a social contract between the world's leaders and the people" UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted unanimously by 193 Heads of State and other top leaders at a summit at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The 17 goals and 169 targets look at wiping out poverty, fighting inequality, and tackling climate change over the next 15 years.

Check the Library catalogue for books, eBooks, and videos that highlight international development and the UN’s 5 sub-themes: gender equality, education, health, economic resilience and climate action. These themes reflect elements of Canada’s international development priorities and the UN’s SDGs.

Atlantic Council for International Cooperation has created a reading list for International Development Week.

Robertson Library Celebrates Black History Month

February is Black History Month.

During Black History Month, people in Canada celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and their communities who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous nation it is today.

The theme of the Government of Canada's Black History Month campaign this year is February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day.

Check out our display in the foyer of the Library featuring books on the history of the Black community in Canada and works of fiction by contemporary Black Canadian authors. Discover your next favourite author!

Explore a selection of the Library’s eBooks collection highlighting Blacks in Canada available through the Library Catalogue.

Looking for movies about Black Canadian communities and lives? Canada's National Film Board (NFB) features Black communities in Canada: A rich history, a 30-film playlist intended to "portray the multi-layered lives of Canada's diverse Black communities."

Curio.ca has a selection of teacher resource guides, videos and audio featuring Black History in Canada. This series celebrates the achievements of Black Canadians and reflects on the stories, experiences and accomplishments of Canada's Black community.

The National Film Board and Curio.ca are available from the Library’s video databases.

CBC Gem, CBC's digital free video streaming service, has a collection of over 50 Canadian and international titles celebrating Black history, Black stories, and honouring Black lives. Included in this collection is the documentary Firsthand: The Skin We're In. Acclaimed author, journalist, and activist Desmond Cole explores what it is to be Black in 21st century Canada. Do Black Lives Matter here?

PEI Community Reads and Bookmark are pleased to host a virtual event with Desmond Cole, on Wednesday, March 2nd at 7 pm. This event is free but registration is required. Check out the PEI Community Reads Facebook page for further information.

Free trial: eHRAF (archaeology/cultures) databases through Feb 28

Interested in world cultures, present or historical?

The library has two databases on "free trial" through February 28,2022.

Both include recent as well as primary historical full text descriptions of peoples/cultures around the world.

eHRAF Archaeology

focuses on in-depth descriptive documents of archaeological traditions from around the world. eHRAF is unique in having subject indexing at the paragraph level.

eHRAF World Cultures

contains information on present and past aspects of cultural and social life for a worldwide sample of societies. The contents are organized by cultures and indexed at the paragraph level by HRAF anthropologists with unique subject identifier codes from the Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM)

For example, here is a link to a Culture Summary document about the Mi'kmaq people, along with other search results, many of which are historical documents (warning: historical primary documents can be offensive).

These two databases can be licensed separately, so if you have feedback about the usefulness of either or both to your studies or research, please indicate which one you are writing about and send it to mbelvadi@upei.ca.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, which marks the day in 1989 when 14 young women at Polytechnique Montreal (12 of whom were engineering students) were murdered in a violent act of misogyny which shook our country. A candlelight vigil is being hosted in the FSDE building, Wed, December 6 at 10am at the Academic Staircase, to honor those who lost their lives in this tragedy.  A commemorative display will also be set up near the entrance all day for those who wish to write messages of reflection and hope. Light refreshments and snacks will also be provided following the ceremony. All are welcome.
