Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day and History Month!

Robertson Library Celebrates National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day!

Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on the summer solstice, June 21!

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.  For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

In June, we commemorate National Indigenous History Month – a month to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.

Canada has officially celebrated National Indigenous History Month for the entire month of June since 2009.

Check out the Library’s Indigenous Resources Guide to find articles, books, documents, websites and other resources related to research on Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

The Government of Canada's Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada website has additional resources on Indigenous history, Indigenous trailblazers, and resources which explore the history, languages, cultures, and experiences of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

Robertson Library Celebrates Asian Heritage Month!

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada.

Asian Heritage Month in Canada is a time to reflect on and recognize the many achievements and contributions that Canadians of Asian heritage have made and continue to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous nation it is today.

“Asian Heritage Month has been celebrated since the 1990s. In December 2001, the Senate of Canada adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to announce May as Asian Heritage Month.

May 5 - Red Dress Day

On May 5, we mark the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, also known as Red Dress Day.

The use of red dresses was originated by Métis artist Jaime Black in 2010 as a representation of the women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people lost to violent crime.

Red dresses continue to be hung across Canada in May, including on the UPEI campus, to honour those lost and to serve as a call for action to prevent future violence.

Freedom To Read Week, Feb. 20-26

Freedom To Read Week -  February 20-26, 2022

“Freedom to Read Week is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms” (freedomtoread.ca). That includes having access to all reading materials.

Books, magazines, newspapers and other materials are challenged in Canada and around the world all the time. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood are among those that have been challenged in Canada.

We encourage you to come to the Library and check out our selection of books that have been challenged in Canada in our Freedom to Read Week display. A description of where, when, and why the book was challenged is attached to each book.

Pick up a sheet (or a few) of the Freedom To Read word search puzzles and challenge yourself to find all the listed words in the puzzle.

And, don’t forget to share your favourite banned or challenged book.

Visit the Freedom to Read Week website for additional resources and information on censorship, free expression, and intellectual freedom.
