12 Days of Postcards - Day 11!

We were experiencing some technical difficulties and couldn't post a postcard for Day 10. But we're back on track today. Day 11 features postcards before and after the Confederation Centre of the Arts was built. The first postcard shows the Market Building, which was destroyed and replaced by the Confederation Centre. The photograph is taken from the corner of Queen Street and Victoria Row. The second postcard was taken shortly after the Centre was built; we are estimating around 1967.

12 Days of Postcards - Day 8!

Today for the 8th day of 12 Days of PEI postcards we feature an Island pipedream that never was. The initial plans for an underwater railway tunnel can be traced back to a former senator, George Howlan, in the late 1800s with the construction of the Prince Edward Island Railway. This plan died out in the early 1900s, but as you can see from the sender of this postcard, they had plans to move to the Island when the tunnel was built.

12 Days of Postcards - Day 6!

Today's postcard for 12 Days of Postcards is featured on a popular TV show in the 1970s. Candlepins for Cash was a Boston-based TV show that premiered in 1973. Contestants would bowl on the show to win money. A portion of the show was dedicated to randomly pulling out postcards from a batch to win a prize. If the contestant won, so did their “Pin Pal.” A number of postcards were sent from the Island to the show. They would write clever messages to wish their potential partner good luck.

12 Days of Postcards - Day 5!

Today's postcard(s) is of the St. Dunstan's Basilica fire in 1913. The Basilica currently stands on Great George Street in Charlottetown. Around midnight on March 8, 1913, the largest church in town burned to the ground. Onlookers watched and took pictures of the massive cathedral as it turned to ashes. The fire was covered in many Maritime publications, such as The Guardian, Patriot, and The Maple Leaf  (featured). The rebuilding of the cathedral began almost immediately.

12 Days of Postcards - Day 4!

For the 4th day of the 12 Days of PEI Postcards we have another tall-tale postcard, but with a fairy-tale twist. This postcard sent in 1911 features a pumpkin carriage pulled by a team of horses. As we know from the fairy-tale Cinderella, the fairy godmother turns the pumpkin into a carriage. We're unsure of the connection between this postcard and the fairy-tale, other than to promote large pumpkins in PEI, but we can assume that the pumpkin was drawn past midnight...

12 Days of Postcards - Day 3!

Welcome back for another day of 12 Days of PEI Postcards.

This image of Murray River appears to be edited to exaggerate the village's landscape. In the days before Photoshop, different techniques were used to enhance images. We can't say for certain, but it looks like the photo was spliced to include a different background from another photo. If anyone is familiar with the Murray River area, let us know what you think!

It appears it was sent to a Miss A. De La Haye of Laurel Farm, perhaps of New Jersey?

12 Days of Postcards - Day 2!

Welcome back to the 2nd day of the 12 Days of PEI Postcards.

On Friday we talked about tall-tale postcards featuring unbelievable photos of crops and animals. Extra-large potatoes were used as a way to market PEI's potato industry with claims that PEI grows the biggest potatoes in the world. I think that load's just a bit too big for the Northumberland ferry...
