Free trial - HeinOnline (law) through July 31

The Library is running a free trial of the HeinOnline Canadian Core legal/historical database now through July 31.

HeinOnline contains the full text (with PDF page images) of Canadian and US law-related documents, as well as some special collections of documents including Women and the Law primary historical documents.

Although there are differences, this product competes in some ways with the Library's existing Lexis Nexis Academic subscription product.

Feedback about this product is most welcome - please send to Melissa Belvadi, mbelvadi@upei.ca . If you also use Lexis Nexis, we would especially welcome your comparison of the two.

The Canadian core collection includes the following:

  • Law Journal Library
  • Canada Supreme Court Reports
  • Women and the Law (Peggy)
  • Acts of the Parliament of Canada (Annual Statutes)
  • Provincial Statutes of Canada

New Book Scanner - Click Mini

The Library now has a Click Mini open-face scanner, very useful for scanning book pages, located in the Learning Commons near the printers.

Like the older Zeta book scanner, it can scan two pages at a time, face up for easy page turning.

It can also scan regular documents, although if you have many loose pages, you may find the MFD automatic document feeder a faster option.

Saving options include:

  • save to USB drive
  • save to a cloud storage option (personal Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, DropBox, Box)
  • save to your smartphone using a QR code (you need a QR reader on your phone)

Format options include:

  • regular PDF (every page is an image)
  • searchable PDF (the text on the pages can be copied and searched)
  • JPG or PNG image files
  • RTF (rich text format) text only for opening in Microsoft Word or Google Docs
  • color, grayscale, or black-and-white - the default is color, and you can change this from page to page

There are many other useful features.

Ask staff for help or advice on how to get the best result for your purpose.

The Zeta is also still available; it has been moved to the pillar near Special Collections.

Stress Free Zone!

Back by popular demand, the Robertson Library is hosting the Stress Free Zone!

Relax, play a game, colour, get crafty, smile for a selfie fashion shoot, get creative with Lego, etc.

Unwind in our beloved bean bag chairs or curl up with a teddy bear & blanket and catch a few extra ZZZ's.

The Stress Free Zone is now open and continues until December 19th.

The 12 Days of Postcards

Beginning on December 1, we will be showcasing 12 days of vintage PEI Postcards. These will be funny and unusual postcards from the 1900s that were used to market Prince Edward Island to the mainland.

On the backs of most postcards you will find personal inscriptions that provide additional information about dates, places, and people.

The purpose of this event is to highlight some of the interesting postcards the Robertson Library has been working hard at digitizing and making available to the public.

We will be posting to the Robertson Library's Twitter and Facebook pages, so check back on December 1 for a quick break from studying!
