Remembering Leo Cheverie: Friend, colleague, and outstanding Islander.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our longtime colleague and friend, Leo Cheverie (1962-2023), and feel blessed to have had him in our lives. A display highlighting Leo's recent advocacy and engagement has been set up in our lobby. We also invite you view this 2019 video interview with Leo from our 50 Years, 50 Voices project, which gives a great overview of his many (many) contributions to the Library and to UPEI as a whole. And, we look forward to sharing more about Leo's remarkable legacy in the weeks and months to come.

12 Days of Postcards - Day 1!

Welcome to the 1st day of 12 Days of Postcards!

In the early 1900s, “tall-tale” postcards featuring unbelievable or exaggerated crops and animals were popular ways to boast of rural life in North America. There are books dedicated to this subject, such as Larger Than Life: The American Tall Tale Postcard 1900-1915 and Tall-tale Postcards: A Pictorial History, in which they described the public’s fascination with these humourous postcards.

This particular postcard was sent from someone vacationing in PEI to an acquaintance in Jersey City, NJ.

Stay tuned on Monday for another tall-tale postcard. Click here to see the full PEI Postcards collection.

Open Pages Author Series Welcomes Mike Conway

Charlottetown’s Mike Conway will speak about his book Home Plate, Blue Helmet at the next OpenPages event, Wednesday, April 26, at 7:00 pm in UPEI’s Robertson Library. The public is warmly invited. Light refreshments will be served and Conway’s book will be available for sale and signing.

OpenPages takes place in the new lounge on the main floor of the Robertson Library and features local authors discussing what inspired them, what they learned, what they want to share.

Conway grew up in Charlottetown’s historic north and east ends, in neighbourhoods full of colorful characters, hard-working families, and close-knit friendships. The stories in his book bring to life the joys and hardships, loyalties and eccentricities, and traditions and transformations he experienced growing up.

For more information, contact Joan Sinclair at Island Studies Press (ispstaff@upei.ca) or Simon Lloyd at the Library (slloyd@upei.ca).
