Energy History of PEI - Environmental Studies Book Club Discussion Series

This winter we will be reading and discussing “Time and a Place: An Environmental History of Prince Edward Island” (2016). Our discussions will probe into past and present environmental changes on PEI, and how and why the Islanders are particularly sensitive to environmental issues and enmeshed in their landscape in a way that is unique among Canadians.

During our second discussion we will focus on the chapter: “Two centuries of energy on Prince Edward Island” by Kathleen Stuart. Those interested to have a more detailed look at the energy history of PEI during 1973-1990 can also read the book by Alan MacEachern “The Institute of Man and Resources: An Environmental Fable” (2003).

We are thrilled that the authors and editors of these books, Ms. Kathleen Stuart, Dr. Alan MacEachern, and Dr. Josh MacFadyen, will join our discussion.

“Time and a Place: An Environmental History of Prince Edward Island” andThe Institute of Man and Resources: An Environmental Fable” are available at the Robertson Library.

Escape Room@Robertson Library - Museum Marauders

Escape Room @ Robertson Library

UPEI students, staff, and faculty are you up for a challenge? Test your mental abilities alongside your fellow UPEI colleagues in a problem-solving fun experience – and, you won't be marked on it!

Robertson Library is presenting an escape room in the Library’s LINC, Room 265, this semester – Museum Marauders.

SYNOPSIS:

The Gables: The Life of Lucy Maud Montgomery, a new museum exhibit showcasing the life of Lucy Maud Montgomery has been loaned a long-lost manuscript which has taken the literary world by storm. Alas! Last week an opportunistic researcher, Mr. Phillips, attempted to steal the manuscript to sell on the black market. We caught him just in time, but not before he locked it in a case and refuses to give us the combinations to the many locks. Being a dedicated Lucy Maud Montgomery research scholar, you’ll be able to find the combinations and keys to the locks within this room. But … Mr. Phillips has placed a time-released self-destruction device in the box, and we only have 30 minutes left on the timer! So you’ll need to act fast to save this piece of Canadian literary history!

You and your fellow UPEI colleagues are locked in a room! Find clues, solve puzzles, find keys, and open locks to save the missing manuscript. You have 30 minutes. Can you find the manuscript in time?

The Escape Room is limited to UPEI students, staff, and faculty and up to six participants per time.  Free admission!

Come and see if you have what it takes to escape!  Don’t miss out!

North of 49 Films - Free Movie – Play Your Gender - Rescheduled to Today

Telefilm Canada, UPEI Campus Life, and Robertson Library are presenting the award-winning movie Play Your Gender. The documentary, by Nova Scotia-based filmmaker Stephanie Clattenburg, is about the under-representation of women in the music industry.

“Only 6 women have ever been nominated for a Producer of the Year Grammy and no woman has ever won. In PLAY YOUR GENDER, Juno award-winning producer Kinnie Starr is on a quest to find out why this disparity exists by speaking to industry stars and veterans about the realities of being a woman in the recording studio.

Play Your Gender features interviews with Sara Quinn of Tegan & Sara, Melissa Auf der Maur of the Smashing Pumpkins, Patty Schemel of Hole, Chantal Kreviazuk, and many more of the music industry’s most talented women.”   https://indiecanent.com/2015/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/PLAY-YOUR-GENDE…

LexisNexis Academic Replaced Jan 1

As of January 1, 2019, UPEI no longer has access to LexisNexis Academic Core.

The usage data was very low, and user experience was that it was too difficult to use.

As that database service mixed together three different kinds of content, we replaced it with three different other products:

1. Eureka for most newspapers, wire services, media transcripts (we already had this) plus backfile purchase of the Times (London) on the Gale platform

2. HeinOnline service for the legal content - laws, court cases, regulatory rules, law review journals

3. Gale Business Insights Global for company "dossier" type information

If you have questions, comments, or concerns about this change, please contact your subject librarian.
