HOW TO BORROW:

Faculty, staff, and students of UPEI must bring or acquire a Campus Card for borrowing privileges; to obtain a card you can go to the University's Sports Centre or Residence services. If you are a community user, click to download a Registration Form or pick one up from the Service Desk. Campus Cards or Community Borrower Cards must be presented for circulation transactions. Any fines incurred are the responsibility of the cardholder. The Library is not responsible for loaned or lost cards. Lost cards must be reported to the Service Desk and to UPEI Security Services immediately to avoid unauthorized use. Your lost card may be turned in to the Library Service Desk or Security Services, please check both places before obtaining a replacement card; replacement cost is $20.00 plus tax.

Off-campus borrowers (members of the general public without previous UPEI association):

To borrow books from the Library you must first create an active borrowing account. To do so, you will have to fill out a Registration Form or acquire one from the Service Desk. Please present this form with Photo ID and proof of address to a member of staff. They will be able to issue you a paper borrower card or use your PEI Public Library card, if you have one.

Anyone under the age of 18 will need to have a parent or guardian's signature to acquire a borrowing account. The parent or guardian must be present at the time of registration and provide Photo ID.

Alumni Borrowers:

After graduating your account will become public and you will still be able to borrow books from our collection. Your UPEI card can still be used as your borrower card, however if you no longer have your UPEI card you will be issued a paper card replacement or you can use your PEI Public Library card, if you have one.

Please note:

  • Library cards must be presented for all circulation transactions.
  • Public Library accounts will expire after 1 year. To renew your account you must visit the Service Desk and update any changes to your contact information.
  • Any fines incurred are the responsibility of the cardholder.
  • The Library is not responsible for loaned or lost cards. Lost cards must be reported to the Service Desk immediately to avoid unauthorized use. Your lost card may have been turned in to the Library Service Desk (902-566-0583) or Security Services (902-566-0384); please check both places before obtaining a replacement card.
  • You do not need a borrower card to use our public computers or do in-house research. The Service Desk is happy to help anyone with or without a borrower card.

BOOK LOAN PERIOD:
Circulating books normally have a loan period of 28 days for undergraduate students with five automatic renewals, provided they are not requested by another patron, you may recieve a recall notice. Reserve material cannot be renewed. Faculty borrowing information can be found at the Circulation Borrower Regulations for Faculty web page.

RETURNING LIBRARY MATERIAL:
Library material is to be returned to the Service Desk. When the Library is closed, the book drop located outside the Library can be used, though borrowers do so at their own risk. (All Media Centre material must be returned to the Service Desk.) Fines are assessed according to the date material is received in the Department. Please note: If the Library is open, Reserve items must be returned to the Service Desk. If you are unable to return materials during regular operating hours, contact the Service Desk by email circdesk@upei.ca or phone 902-566-0583.
