In OneSearch, you'll see many different types of sources mixed together. You can use the limiters to find the types of sources you need.
Choose Academic (Peer-Reviewed) Journals to see mostly academic journal articles.
Or, choose Books Only from the All Filters menu to see mostly books and book chapters. (Alternatively, you can choose both Books and eBooks from the Source Type options. You do need to choose both--some eBooks are labelled "Books.")
Book Chapter or Journal Article?
Some scholarly books are written by one author or by a small group of authors who worked together on the whole thing. Other scholarly books have editors who have put together a collection of chapters. In these books, each chapter will have its own author(s), and the chapters may look quite similar to journal articles.
Look for the title of the journal or book. Try searching for it in a search engine. A book will usually show up on its publisher's website and on bookstore websites. A journal will usually have its own website with information about previous issues, submitting articles, etc.
If you're still not sure, you can ask the librarian working with your class or subject. Send them the information you have (including the title and author).
If your assignment requires scholarly or peer-reviewed journal articles, you may also be able to use a scholarly book chapter, but you will need to check with your instructor first.
Citation Information
If you're looking at a citation, citations for books and book chapters tend to include information about the editors and the publisher, whereas citations for journal articles will include information about the volume number and issue. (Just to complicate things, some books also have volume numbers!)
For example, here's an MLA citation for a book chapter:
McGowan, John. “Hannah Arendt’s Performative Politics.” The Oxford Handbook of Rhetoric and Political Theory, edited by Dilip Gaonkar and Keith Topper, Oxford University Press, 2022, pp. 1–11.
And here's an MLA citation for a journal article:
Feehan, Angela, and Monique Charest. “A Scoping Review of Oral Language and Social Communication Abilities in Children with Tourette Syndrome.” International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, vol. 59, no. 1, Jan.-Feb. 2024, pp. 143-164.
