Who: Association of Canadian University Publishers (ACUP) in cooperation with the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) using OCUL's "ScholarsPortal" hosting platform
What: Over 500 ebooks published by ACUP publishers, on a wide variety of subjects. UPEI's purchase starts with 2014 and will continue through the release of the 2017 books.
Where: ScholarsPortal Ebooks Search
Note: UPEI only provides access to 2014+ ebooks on this platform, not everything you might find on it.
How:
Most ACUP ebooks require you to install the Adobe Digital Editions ebook reader or have a mobile device that is compatible with it.
ScholarsPortal provides an FAQ to explain how to access these ebooks.
The ebooks may fall into one of three use categories:
DRM level |
field 956 |
Suggested alternative text |
Comments |
SUPO |
"Limited to one user at a time" |
Limited to one user at a time, reproduction limited to 20% or one chapter at a time |
Users must download the book into an Adobe-compatible reader, but can copy or print up to 20% of it from within the reader. |
SUPO+ |
"Limited to one user at a time and no downloads" |
Limited to one user at a time and no reproduction |
Users must download the book into an Adobe-compatible reader and cannot copy or print anything from within it. (The use of the phrase 'no download' here is unfortunate. The book must be downloaded, but it cannot be used the way a typical downloaded PDF can.) |
MUPO |
any ACUP title that does not have a 956 statement beginning "limited to one user…" (It doesn't look like less restrictive books (MUPO) have a consistent 956 statement.) |
Unlimited concurrent user limit, and reproduction limited to 20% or one chapter at a time |
Can be read in a web-browser by an unlimited number of users. Users can also download up to 20% of the book as a standard PDF. |
