On Display on the Main Floor of Robertson Library are 46 historical maps relating to Prince Edward Island and the Atlantic Canada region. This display visually illustrates the evolving knowledge which explorers, cartographers, and surveyors have had of this region from its earliest discovery in the 16th century to the formation of Canada. The "Map Gallery" is located past the Information Desk in the Government Documents area. Several of the maps housed in the Special Collections Room are within the climate controlled storage area. 10. Gastaldi, Giacomo, c1500-1565. La Nova Francia. Venice: after 1556, c1558. Note: The original woodcut block was destroyed by fire in 1556. This copy is the second state and is a pre-Cartier conception of the Northeast coast of America from New York to Labrador. The information is derived from Verrazzano's 1524 voyage. The second state includes figures depicting Indians, animals, demons and ships but differs from the first woodcut by the addition of several weeping willow trees.
