Display honours Heritage Week ... and a new "Anne"

This February brings two events of special significance for lovers of PEI culture and heritage: the annual observance of Heritage Week falls in mid-February, while Islander Day 2016 (February 15th) sees the launch of a new and much-anticipated television adaptation of that most iconic Island literary work, LM Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. In a further happy coincidence, the theme chosen this year for Heritage Week events Canada-wide is “Distinctive Destinations: Experience Historic Places.” Thanks to Montgomery’s vivid evocation of her beloved Prince Edward Island home, our province can boast one of the most truly distinctive literary destinations in the world.

In celebration, the Library’s University Archives and Special Collections are pleased to present this display,

Distinctive Destination: Montgomery’s Cavendish, Anne’s Green Gables

The model and interpretive panel, a gift of LMMI Research Associate Dr. Donna Jane Campbell, show the Macneill Homestead in Cavendish, the “hallowed ground” where Montgomery did much of her early writing, including the manuscript for Anne of Green Gables. The main display case, meanwhile, offers a small sampling  — drawn from our Prince Edward Island and LM Montgomery Institute (LMMI) collections — of published adaptations and explorations inspired by Montgomery’s most famous creations, Anne Shirley and Green Gables. Of special note are the several Japanese works, reflecting the cultural impact of Montgomery in Japan and in numerous other locales worldwide.

This display also recognizes our participation in the Archives Council of Prince Edward Island, which this year is offering the first of what we hope will be an annual series of Heritage Week-themed displays, and our ongoing partnership with the LM Montgomery Institute.
