How do I write a paper?

Writing a paper is a lot more than just writing. Writing a paper in university involves researching, note-taking, organizing information, citing, and writing.

It is not a linear process; you might start writing and then realize you need more information.

One of the best ways to get familiar with the writing style of academic research papers is to read many scholarly articles or book chapters. Pay attention to the vocabulary the author uses, how they talk about other people's research and writing, and how they make their arguments.

There is help available to you at UPEI:

  • your instructor can answer questions about what they expect. They may also be able to direct you to a good sample paper.
  • your librarian can help you with your research. They can also help you find information about the format and citation style you are supposed to be using.
  • tutors in the Writing Centre can help you with the organization, grammar, style, and formatting of your paper.
