What software and hardware is available on the laptop?

The Dells have Windows 10, Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, Adobe Acrobat, 7zip, VLC, and other standard applications, but do not have access to Student Network applications like MiniTab and SPSS.

Can personal software and documents be saved on the laptop?

Software and personal documents can be saved on the hard drive of the laptop during the borrowed period. However, all information must be saved to removable media (USB stick) or emailed prior to return. Laptops will be re-imaged upon return to the Service Desk. The library assumes no responsibility for the loss of, or damage to, any file placed on or used on the laptop.

Can I print from the laptop?

Can I access the Internet with the laptop?

The laptops are equipped with wireless network access.

What comes with the laptop?

The laptop will come in a carrying case with a power cord.

Laptop/Chromebook Computer Lending Policy

  • LIABILITY: You the user may be liable for the cost of repair or replacement in the event of loss due to theft, damage, negligence or misuse. The Library will not assume responsibility for lost files due to viruses, hardware failure or network interruptions. Laptops/Chromebook should not be left unattended.
  • ELIGIBILITY: Laptop/Chromebook computer loans are restricted to current UPEI students, staff and faculty. You may not borrow a laptop if you have more than $10.00 in fines or if you have previously violated the laptop loan agreement. You may only sign out one laptop/Chromebook at a time.
  • UPEI CAMPUS CARDS: Laptops/Chromebooks are available for loan on a first-come, first-served basis at the Service Desk. Eligible users MUST present their valid UPEI Campus Card without exception, when requesting a laptop/Chromebook.
  • LOAN PERIOD: Laptops/Chromebooks are available for loan from the Library’s Service Desk for a twenty-eight day (4 weeks) loan period.
  • RENEWALS: Laptops/Chromebooks cannot be renewed. However, another laptop may be checked out after a 3 hour waiting period if one is available.
  • ADVANCE BOOKING: No booking. Laptops/Chromebooks are available on a first-come, first-served basis only.
  • FINES: $5 per day will apply for overdue laptops/Chromebooks. 
  • REPLACEMENT AND DAMAGE FINES: Laptops/Chromebooks not returned within 15 days of their time due will be considered lost and you will be billed for the replacement cost. Damage fines will be assessed after library staff evaluate the cost of repairing the particular damage.
  • RETURNS: Laptop/Chromebook computers must be returned in-person to staff at the Service Desk.  All user files will be deleted and cannot be recovered. Laptops/Chromebooks are re-imaged (wiped clear of any trace of prior user's use) upon return to the Service Desk.
  • SUPPORT: Library Service Desk staff members do not provide any technical support for laptops/Chromebooks. Support for the Dells is provided through the Library's IT Help Desk and the ITSS helpdesk, 566-0465 or email helpdesk@upei.ca.
