How do I know which citation style to use?

Check your syllabus or assignment instructions for information about which citation style to use.

Here are some citation styles that are assigned at UPEI:

  • APA  (American Psychological Association) style is common in the social sciences and some sciences
  • MLA (Modern Language Association) style is common in the humanities
  • Chicago style (or a variation called Turabian style) is used in history and related subjects
  • CSE (Council of Science Editors) style is used in some science courses
  • ACS (American Chemical Society) style is sometimes used in chemistry
  • NLM (National Library of Medicine) style is used in paramedicine
  • AAA (American Anthropological Association) and ASA (American Sociological Assocation) style are sometimes used in Sociology/Anthropology.

We have print versions of many complete style guides available on reserve at the library services desk.

The tutors at the Writing Centre can also help you with citations and formatting.
