How to Borrow | Book Loan Period | Media Centre Loan Period | Returning Material | Overdues | Holds | Lost Material | Address Change | Suspension of Borrowing Privileges|
HOW TO BORROW:
Faculty, staff, students of UPEI and off-campus borrowers must acquire a Campus Card at the University's Sports Centre. Off-campus borrowers (members of the general public) must first obtain and complete a library registration form. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for these forms. Campus Cards must be presented for circulation transactions. Any fines incurred are the responsibility of the cardholder. The Library is not responsible for loaned or lost cards. Lost cards must be reported to the Circulation Desk and to UPEI Security Services immediately to avoid unauthorized use. Your lost card may be turned in to Circulation or Security Services. Please check both places before obtaining a replacement card. Replacement I.D. cards cost $10.00.
BOOK LOAN PERIOD:
Circulating books normally have a loan period of 21 days for undergraduate students with two renewals, provided they are not requested by another patron. Renewals may be done by telephone, in person, or on-line through the Library Catalogue or My Library Account. Reserve material cannot be renewed. Faculty borrowing information can be found at the Circulation Borrower Regulations for Faculty web page.
MEDIA CENTRE LOAN PERIOD:
Audio-cassettes and slides can be borrowed for 7 days with two renewals. For more information on this or other Media Centre details, please contact staff at the Circulation Desk at 566-0583.
RETURNING LIBRARY MATERIAL:
Library material is to be returned to the Circulation Desk. When the Library is closed, the book drop located outside the Library can be used, though borrowers do so at their own risk. (All Media Centre material must be returned to the Circulation Desk.) Fines are assessed according to the date material is received in the Department. Please note: If the Library is open, Reserve items must be returned to the Circulation Desk.
OVERDUES AND FINE RATES:
Fines are assessed on all overdue Library materials. All items are to be returned to the Library on or before the due date. Borrowers can check under My Library Account to see when items are due and/or renew items. Fines are paid at the Circulation Desk during operating hours. Overdue items are assessed a fine of $.25 per day, per item for circulating books, and up to $5.00 per hour for Reserve materials.
HOLDS:
Holds (up to 5 at one time) can be placed on material already signed out. This can be done by the Circulation Desk staff or through the Library catalogue. Please note that the Hold service is only for those circulating items which have "Checked out" as their status, not for items which are available in the Library or for non-circulating items such as Reference material. A borrower cannot place a hold on a book s/he has currently signed out.
LOST AND DAMAGED MATERIAL:
The penalty for lost or damaged material is $50.00 minimum. The charge covers any replacement and processing costs.
ADDRESS CHANGE:
Library patrons must notify the Circulation Desk immediately of any change in address or phone number.
SUSPENSION OF ALL BORROWING PRIVILEGES:
All borrowing privileges will automatically be suspended when a borrower has reached $10.00 in fines.
PLEASE NOTE: A summary of Circulation policies and loan periods is available in handout form at the Circulation Desk. For additional information, please inquire at the Circulation Desk or telephone 566-0583.
The Library is a place for study and research. Out of courtesy for the study needs of others, noise is not permitted in the Super Quiet study areas. Conversation should be kept to a minimum in the Library. Your co-operation is appreciated!
Reserves
How to Borrow | Loan Period | Fines | Accessing Reserves |
Reserves refer to the collection of material set aside by instructors for the use of their students. You may also hear the the expression on reserve. Material may include books (either library or faculty copies), photocopies, audiovisual materials, or miscellaneous items. These items are available for a limited loan period so that students may have relatively easy access to them. Reserves are located at the Circulation Desk on the Main Level of the Library.
How to Borrow:
Books on reserve are shelved alphabetically by title to speed the location process, so please request items by book title. Photocopies are filed by their course and number (e.g. Biology 342), so please ask for the folder for that course and number. It may also be useful to know the instructor's name as there may be more than one section per course. After materials have been located, you will be asked for your Campus Card in order to sign them out.
Loan Period:
Loan periods may vary from 1 hour to 7 days depending upon the demand for an item, the number of copies, and/or the number of students in the course. Items may be taken out of the Library unless it has been specified that the material is for In house use only.
Fines:
Fines are assessed on overdue Reserve materials at $1.00 per hour for hourly materials and $1.00 per day for daily materials, including photocopies, up to a maximum of $15.00 per item. Overdue laptops are $5.00 per hour.
Accessing Reserves:
You can find out what material is on reserve and check its status by using the library web site. Select Reserves from the top navigation bar on the home page. Click the link for the appropriate department, then the course number to see a list of material. Items listed near the top of the page are available through electronic reserve. Those at the bottom are available to be signed out from the Circulation Desk.
Notes:
- A valid Campus Card must be presented in order to borrow Reserve material.
- Reserve material cannot be renewed by phone.
- A hold cannot be placed on Reserve material. If you are having problems getting the material, let the Library staff know and talk to your instructor. The loan period may be too long or there may not be enough copies on Reserve.
